ABSTRACT

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the sex-specific association between hyperuricemia and the risk of hypertension and whether obesity mediates this association. METHODS: This study included 31,395 (47.0% women) adults without hypertension, cardiovascular disease, or cancer at baseline who completed at least one follow-up annual examination between 2009 and 2016. Cox regression models were performed to calculate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Mediation analysis was conducted to estimate the effect of body mass index on the association between hyperuricemia and hypertension. RESULTS: During a median 2.9-year follow-up, hyperuricemia was significantly associated with a higher risk of hypertension (HR 1.15, 95%CI 1.07-1.24 for all participants; HR 1.12, 95%CI 1.03-1.22 for men; and HR 1.23, 95%CI 1.02-1.48 for women) after adjustment for potential confounders. Additional adjustment for body mass index attenuated this association (HR 1.09, 95%CI 1.08-1.10 for all participants; HR 1.07; 95%CI 0.98-1.16 for men; HR 1.18; 95%CI 0.96-1.44 for women). Mediation analysis showed that BMI partially mediated the relationship between hyperuricemia and incident hypertension (indirect effect HR 1.09, 95%CI 1.08-1.10; direct effect: HR 1.08, 95%CI 1.02-1.15). The percentage of the mediation effect was 53.2% (95%CI 37.9-84.5). CONCLUSION: Hyperuricemia is associated with a risk of hypertension in both sexes, and BMI partially mediates hyperuricemia-related incident hypertension.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the levels of serum Vitamin D(VD) from preconception to pregnancy in Jiading district of Shanghai, and explore the risk factors of VD concentration deficiency in the second and third trimester of pregnancy. Methods A total of 94 women who planned to have antenatal care and delivery in Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Jiading district of Shanghai from September 2016 to December 2018 were recruited as the study participants. Chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) was used to examine the concentration of women’s serum VD from preconception to pregnancy. A total of 282 serum samples were detected. Results The prevalence of VD deficiency among 94 women from preconception to pregnancy were 40.4%,57.4% and 48.9% respectively. Results of the mixed linear model showed that women who had dyed or permed hair within the past 1 year had significantly lower serum VD levels during pregnancy (P<0.05), and women who often drank milk and ate deep-sea fish during pregnancy had higher VD levels during pregnancy (P<0.05). Conclusions VD deficiency was common among women in Jiading district of Shanghai, and it should be emphasized to supplement VD before and during pregnancy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Cystathionine β-synthase is a major enzyme in the metabolism of plasma homocysteine. Hyperhomocysteinemia is positively associated with hypertension and stroke. The present study was performed to examine the possible effects of Cystathionine β-synthase promoter methylation on the development of hypertension and stroke. METHODS: Using quantitative methylation-specific PCR, we determined the Cystathionine β-synthase methylation levels in 218 healthy individuals and 132 and 243 age- and gender-matched stroke and hypertensive patients, respectively. The relative changes in Cystathionine β-synthase promoter methylation were analyzed using the 2-ΔΔCt method. The percent of the methylated reference of Cystathionine β-synthase was used to represent the Cystathionine β-synthase promoter methylation levels. RESULTS: In this study, the Cystathionine β-synthase promoter methylation levels of hypertensive and stroke participants were both higher than that of the healthy individuals (median percentages of the methylated reference were 50.61%, 38.05% and 30.53%, respectively, all p<0.001). Multivariable analysis showed that Cystathionine β-synthase promoter hypermethylation increased the risk of hypertension [odds ratio, OR (95% confidence interval, CI)=1.035 (1.025-1.045)] and stroke [OR (95% CI)=1.015 (1.003-1.028)]. The area under the curve of Cystathionine β-synthase promoter methylation was 0.844 (95% CI: 0.796-0.892) in male patients with hypertension and 0.722 (95% CI: 0.653-0.799) in male patients with stroke. CONCLUSION: Cystathionine β-synthase promoter hypermethylation increases the risk of hypertension and stroke, especially in male patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective To understand the relationship between green tea drinking and/or garlic consumption and lung cancer. Methods A population-based case-control study was conducted in Ganyu county,Jiangsu province.Epidemiological data including demography, lifestyle, environmental exposures and dietary habits were collected by face-to-face interviews using a standardized questionnaire.Unconditional logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) in both univariate and multivariate analyses. Results Both green tea drinking and garlic consumption were inversely associated with lung cancer and the adjusted ORs were:0.78 (95%CI:0.65-0.95) for green tea,0.79 (95% CI:0.66-0.95) for garlic intake, and 0.69 (95%CI:0.53-0.89) for both, respectively. They also modified the associations of smoking, fried food intake and cooking oil under high-temperature with lung cancer as risk factors.Potential interactions were found between garlic or green tea and the risk factors of lung cancer. Conclusion Both green tea drinking and garlic consumption might serve as protective factors on lung cancer.

ABSTRACT

Objective To examine the association between tea drinking and the risk of lung cancer in Chinese population. Methods All relevant published articles in Chinese and English literature database were identified.Meta-analysis was conducted.Combined odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated to estimate the associations and dose-response relationship between tea drinking and the risk of lung cancer. Results Twelve studies were included. An inverse association with lung cancer was observed on tea drinkers when compared to non-tea drinkers (OR=0.66,95%CI:0.49-0.89).Conclusion Tea drinking might serve as a protective factor on lung cancer in the Chinese population.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the risk factors and protective factors for stomach cancer in Ganyu county. Methods Data of 319 pairs of new stomach cancer cases and health controls(1:1 matched)were studied by conditional Logistic regression method on the influential factors. Results The main risk factors for stomach cancer were the habits of eating hot foods(OR= 2.21,95%CI:1.57~3.12),the history of upper gastrointestinal inflammation(4.26,2.59~7.03),family history of cancer(2.29, 1.37~3.82);The main protective factors were often eating raw garlic(OR=0.64,95%CI:0.42~0.96),regular drinking tea(0.37, 0.25~0.54).Conclusion Unhealthy dietary habits, the history of upper gastrointestinal inflammation and family history of cancer are related to stomach cancer, while eating raw garlic and regular drinking tea may be effective in preventing the occurrence of stomach cancer. The results could be applied in stomach cancer prevention activities in Ganyu county.
